Are there minerals in my cell phone? Where on Earth did that come from? How do you turn a rock into a copper pipe? What is the role of minerals and mining in my life? You can find answers to these questions and many more at the annual BC Mining Week Community Fair, from 10am to 3pm. This event was created by the Mineral Resources Education Program of BC (MREPBC) in partnership with the Association for Mineral Exploration BC (AMEBC) and is supported by sponsorship acquired through Partners in Mining, the BC Mining Week Committee. Individuals, groups and organizations from our own mining community will be bringing displays, demonstrations and activities that will highlight mineral exploration, the mining process including reclamation, and the roles of minerals in every day life. More than 300 elementary students from Lower Mainland Schools have been invited, as has been the general public, to participate in a variety of activities designed to build better understanding of the importance of mining and the relevance of mineral resources in daily life. We need your support to make this possible!

Where: Lawn facing Georgia Street - Vancouver Art Gallery,

Admission: Free

Some highlights of the fair include the following:

- Ten pavilions featuring a variety of mineral exploration and mining related displays and activities

- Attendance by students from elementary schools throughout the Lower Mainland

- Mineral exploration and mining equipment displays

- Entertainment including face painting, stilt walkers, a band, and more.

Louis Kahn, the American architect, Said: “Good Architecture makes the intangible tangible so as to evoke the intangible.” I long to do just that. I paint about the human condition, about the mystery of life. About the tantalizing fact that we have only intimations, and will never know, the nature of reality. About the illusion that life is secure whereas in fact anything could happen at any time to totally change its course. About loss, fragility, old age, and mortality. And also about compassion and about love offering redemption from our plight.

Figures in my work are often androgynous and not of a particular person. Rather they are about what confronts us because we are human.
I try to capture that moment of bewilderment when structure and order in our existence breaks down, everything looks unfamiliar, and we are sure of nothing.

I use drafting film because I feel that it creates the ephemeral quality that I want in my work. The figures are in abstract settings as I do not want to place them in any one human context. I use oil paint as I love the materiality of the medium. In these works, I am not interested in painting the body in a realistic manner, but rather in finding a way to represent it so that it resonates more deeply with the viewer.

Born, raised, and still living in Toronto, Yelland doesn't set out to make specific statements with his paintings. Rather, he prefers people to react intuitively and emotionally as opposed to intellectually. His intention is to draw the viewer in with something that may seem familiar at first, but, upon closer inspection, the imagery subverts any initial reaction. The paintings may be perceived as sombre, but are balanced with a subtle sense of humour, either within the image itself or, perhaps, in the title. Use of light plays a major role in determining the emotional tone and is the content when none seems readily apparent. He finds overanalysis on his part can inhibit an audience from forming their own understanding of the work, thus stunting the purpose of the art itself.

Peter Wyse, a Sobey Art Award nominee, was born in 1970 (The Year of the Dog) in Kamloops, British Columbia. He works from his home studio in the historic village of Clayburn, 75 km east of Vancouver. Peter shares this charming space with his wife, son, and labradoodle ‘Scout’. Peter was introduced to art at an early age through his grandfather, R.E.Walker, who schooled his grandson in the practice of painting and the discipline required by an artist. He later studied art history and fine arts at the University of British Columbia. Four years after receiving his degree, his grandfather suggested, “Time to quit your day job!” This encouragement has led to successful solo and group exhibitions in BC,
Alberta and Washington State. His work is now featured in private collections throughout the world.
“I live within a landscape of dogs and frogs, flora and fauna, and even a rubber duck or two. My life is both peaceful and playful and this is what I paint.”
Peter Wyse’s eclectic art interests range from Matisse and Rothko to the murals of mesoamerica. These influences are evident within his spatial relationships and with his lively use of colour and line. While Peter has
worked with a range of mediums, he now paints exclusively with acrylics. Insatiably curious, Peter takes great delight in the mundane, using his unique style of layering and sanding flat coats of paint to reveal how the
ordinary can become extraordinary.
